He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1871 and 1872, and was a delegate to the 1872 Republican National Convention. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1880 and served one term, from 1881 to 1887. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1886. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law in Oshkosh. He died in 1912 and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh.
